A friend on Facebook sent me a link to an article about Brazilian mixed media artist, Ayrson Heraclito, who explores the relations between Brazil and Africa (AfroPunk.com). This article goes a little bit in more detail: artreview.com, whereas the previous link has more of the images of his work.
I remember doing a similar project in relating mass media and the black presence as a photography project for a class. The assignment was to do a portrait series. A friend modeled for me and I photographed her surround by magazines, then paper, then newspaper, etc. It was a short-lived project and because this was still doing the time of film, when my pictures didn’t come out clearly, I dropped the project altogether. Maybe I should revisit it.
At any rate, I was inspired to do a bean Afro. I tried doing it like Ayrson but I didn’t have enough beans. I will try it again however.
Here is my favorite model showing the scale of my beans Afro.
If you’re old enough, you will understand what the title means. Hint: Hair at the nape of the neck.
